Cecile Richards: Harrisburg wants to criminalize abortion

Right now, extremists in the Pennsylvania General Assembly, emboldened by President Donald Trump’s extreme agenda against women, are trying to force passage of a dangerous, intrusive anti-women’s health bill — and they’re just getting started.

Fortunately, women and families have strong allies in Governor Tom Wolf and First Lady Frances Wolf. They’ve volunteered together at Planned Parenthood, and they know decisions around health care should be left to a woman and her doctor, without interference from politicians in Harrisburg.

Trump’s allies introduced legislation that would outlaw abortion for some women with the most tragic of medical circumstances, even in cases of rape or incest — but Governor Wolf not only pledged to veto it, he’s also toured the state to stand with women.

Now it’s our turn to stand with him. Chip in $3 or more to show you’re with Governor Wolf in the fight to protect a woman’s right to make her own health care decision.

In April of last year, I stood with Governor Wolf and several women, such as Karen Agatone, at a press conference to share personal stories in opposition to this extreme legislation.

“My husband squeezed my hand and I tried not to panic. Then the doctor told us our baby had a form of dwarfism so severe that her chance of survival was incredibly low, actually non-existent, incompatible with life. I want people to know abortion is not about the unwanted, the unvalued, and the unknown babies of the word. Abortion is my story and what happened to my family. The decision we made for Evelyn was made because her life mattered to us.” – Karen Agatone

The anti-women leadership in Harrisburg refused to hold public hearings on their bill. They just weren’t interested in taking into consideration stories like Karen’s or testimony from medical experts before voting. They even refused to listen to a Republican senator who had an experience similar to Karen’s.

It’s clear Trump’s allies are more intent than ever on rolling back women’s rights, and we can’t let that happen.

Governor Wolf has always been one of our fiercest champions. He’ll always fight for women’s rights — and right now, he’s all who stands in the way of Harrisburg politicians enacting their extreme, anti-women’s health legislation into law.

If you’re proud to have a governor who has your back in this fight, then now is the time to show it — chip in $3 or more to Governor Tom Wolf’s campaign.
